Banking and mobile payments

Cash still works in places, but daily life in most Chinese cities runs on QR codes.

After you receive a residence permit and a local phone number, opening a bank account becomes much easier. Major banks have branches that handle foreigner accounts, though English support varies by location.

Opening a bank account

  • Bring passport, residence permit, and local phone number
  • Some branches ask for an employer letter or proof of address
  • Ask for online banking and a debit card during the appointment
  • Keep the branch’s WeChat contact if staff offer one for follow-up

Alipay and WeChat Pay

These two apps cover restaurants, taxis, convenience stores, utilities, and many government services. International cards can often be linked for visitors and new arrivals, while residents usually connect a local bank card for smoother limits and fewer interruptions.

  • Set up Alipay first if you want a clearer English interface for beginners
  • Add WeChat Pay as well — many small vendors prefer it
  • Verify identity carefully; name spelling should match your passport
  • Keep a small amount of cash for rare offline situations
Fees, verification rules, and foreign-card support can change. Check in-app notices and your bank’s advice before large transfers.
