Focus first on tones, pinyin, and high-frequency phrases for transport, food, and introductions. Character study can grow in parallel once speaking confidence starts.

A simple starter plan

  • Weeks 1–2: pinyin and the four tones
  • Weeks 3–6: greetings, directions, ordering food, numbers, and mobile-payment phrases
  • Ongoing: 15–20 minutes of listening daily plus one conversation exchange

Tools people commonly use

  • HSK-aligned courses for structured progression
  • Flashcard apps for vocabulary
  • Language exchanges and tutors for speaking practice
  • Watching short videos with dual subtitles
