Healthcare basics

China has large public hospitals and a growing network of international clinics in major cities.

Employees on work permits are often enrolled in local social insurance, which can include medical coverage. Many expats also keep international private insurance for English-speaking clinics and broader hospital choice.

Public hospitals

Public hospitals are widely used and can be excellent for many specialties. Expect busier waiting areas, appointment systems through apps, and limited English outside international departments. Bring your passport and residence permit.

International clinics

In Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, and other hubs, private international clinics offer multilingual staff and familiar appointment styles. Costs are higher; confirm direct billing with your insurer.

Pharmacies and prescriptions

  • Neighborhood pharmacies are easy to find
  • Some medicines available over the counter elsewhere may require a prescription
  • Keep a personal list of medication names in English and Chinese
This is general orientation, not medical advice. For emergencies, dial local emergency services and inform your employer’s HR contact.
